S.D. rabies cases on the rise (The Argus Leader)
An increase in cases of rabies in animals has prompted state officials to remind people to vaccinate their pets. In 2009, the South Dakota Department of Health had 53 confirmed cases of rabies in animals, compared to 24 in 2008. Of the 53 animals, 35 were wild, including 31 skunks. Domestic animals confirmed include seven dogs, four cats, four cattle and two horses.

The kick-off party is today for the petition drive to put on the November ballot an issue that would phase out keeping farm animals in small cages, prohibit killing them by hanging or strangulation and outlaw slaughtering downed animals for human consumption. The party starts at 6 p.m. today at the Solon Community Center, 35000 Portz Parkway.
